Representative Doug Lamborn (R - Colorado) would like to apologize for referring to President Obama as a tar baby. Henceforth he shall use less racist descriptions like spook or spear-chucker.

Because Doug Lamborn wants you to know he is not a racist. A homophone homophobe and bigot sure, but not a racist. Some of his unmet best friends are black.

Krugman (via Digby) sums it up quite well:

President Obama could have been more adamant in dealing with Republicans, perhaps threatening to use constitutional powers to ignore the debt ceiling if Congress abrogated its responsibility to raise it. But this episode demonstrates the effectiveness of extortion. Reasonable people are forced to give in to those willing to endanger the national interest.

And the media gives a notable assist to the destroyers.

Because Krugman has this terrible habit of being right I guess. How...dare...he!!!

Deja Vu Sucks

In other even worse stories, history repeats itself yet again:

Syrian forces killed nearly 140 people on Sunday including 100 when the army stormed the flashpoint protest city of Hama to crush dissent on the eve of Ramadan, activists said.

If that seems at all familiar, it is because it should. In February 1982, the original Assad, Hafez, ordered an assault that his son Rifaat led killing perhaps tens of thousands in a crackdown in the same city. Not quite 20 years later another son Bashar has done it again.

Never mind forgetting history, this is reliving it in the worst possible way.
